Music has now more than ever become the way in which people can communicate, can share their feelings with other and certainly through which they can connect and have fun with other individuals. Music has greatly evolved over the years and the musical experience that we have nowadays is so much richer than some time ago. One is nowadays able to enjoy the sound of classical and traditional music but one also has the freedom to listen to music that provides them with alternatives so to speak. This is the alternative music that people can nowadays enjoy thanks to the talent and devotion of those who started this current in the 1980s.

They say that music can tell much about an individual. This has become more like a saying and people with certain preferences in the musical area are most likely to gather together and share their love for this art. The underground musical scene was protruded by the alternative music for the first time in the 1980s. Alternative music, also referred to alternative rock is a particular genre of music that as mentioned before emerged in the 1980s and it had become so much more popular by the 1990s and even up to this day. The term alternative rock can itself suggest different sub-genres of music such as indie pop, indie rock, Britpop, gothic rock and some others. The term underground music has on the other hand been used to describe the work of the rock artists in the 1980s, in the times that alternative rock was a term used to describe all the types of rock genres and especially those descended from punk rock.

Not many alternative rock bands have become known at the beginning of this genre's times, mostly because the artists did not intended to achieve commercial success and mainstream recognition, but they were more focused on the quality of their work and providing their circles of fans with the good quality music they deserved. However, some of these bands became popular and some names include R.E.M. and The Cure. The 1990s however were characterized by a break through when Nirvana become very famous and other types of alternative rock, in special grunge and Britpop started to skyrocket in popularity. It was in the last decade of the 20th century that alternative rock managed to truly enter the popular musical mainstream which led to an increasing number of bands becoming more and more popular.

Nowadays, one can still listen to the music of several popular alternative rock bands such as The Stroke, Franz Ferdinand, The Rapture and some others. The Killers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Modest Mouse have also brought this music genre back into the attention of its enthusiasts.
